...otherwise Mr. Primrose wouldn't just say that the man was a neighbouring clergyman, but would probably express serious doubts about his church, and would refuse to let his son marry a member of it! Although other sects certainly existed at the time (Methodists, Quakers, etc.), I seem to recall that the Church of England was very much the national church, especially among the upper ranks of society.
