Catgut was never cat's gut, only sheep's (perhaps other herbivores). Washed and dried, it was used for stringing beads (not to mention for fiddle strings), if I remember correctly, as it can stand more wear and tear than textile threads. The loose net made out of it was definitely used in book binding - again for strength. Perhaps the ladies were embroidering on it?
