I would say that Will wrote teh letter, but at Sophia's insistence. He might wish to temporise but she woudl probalby say "make sure that that girl knows you're engaged to me, and keeps her hands off you, and tell her that you were just friendly with her.. or our engagemetnt is OFF!"

So she'd dictate that he wrote it NOW while she was there, to be quite sure that the job was done.
