I have also wondered how the affair wtih Eliza came to Mrs Smtih's ears. Since Will knew that Eliz was at least a borderline lady, not an actress or a member of the demi monde, I should think that he kept his affair with her very quiet and didn't take her out in public. SO how did someone get to know of hte affair and tell Mrs Smith? Some people have suggested that if ELiza was going around London asking about Willougbhy a relative with a grudge might have heard of this and written to Mrs S to get Willoughby in trouble. But if that were happening would the affair not have become public property? In short, was Eliza, now visibly pregnant, visiting people who might know Will (which suggests that he told her some of his friends and relatives names and addresses)...
