Is Willoughby lying   Written by amytat (10/24/2012 2:11 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Lying to Elinor, penned by Robbin
Are you new?

On whether he’s drunk: I always assumed he was being sarcastic.

On the two Eliza questions: I tend to think he’s lying but if he’s telling the truth I think that’s just as bad since it shows how truly unconcerned he is about Eliza’s welfare.

On whether he remembers what he told Marianne: I think it’s possible he didn’t pay much attention to what he was saying and can’t remember exactly what he said – again that’s not really better than if he’s lying. It does sound like he’s aware he said something to make her think he’d return even if he doesn’t remember exactly what.

On the letter: It’s hard to know without knowing much about Sophia, besides what Willoughby tells us, but I think it’s more likely that Willoughby wrote the letter. I think he would be trying to convince Sophia that he was merely friends with the Dashwood family and never meant to raise Marianne’s hopes and would write the letter himself in order to help convince her. I agree he’s perfectly capable of composing it.
