" Elinor was to be the comforter of others in her own distresses"
I felt so sorry for Elinor having to break it to Marianne about the engagement between Edward and Lucy. Even though she had gotten to the point where she could appear calm at hearing Mrs. Jennings' news, she was more worried about destroying Marianne's opinion of Edward and in some ways of making her relive her disappointment with Willoughby.
I really think this scene is the first big wake up call for Marianne. "Oh! Elinor," she cried, "you have made me hate myself for ever. How barbarous have I been to you! "
I think that this affects Marianne more deeply and brings about more of a change in her even than Willoughby's betrayal.
Any thoughts on this?
