Do you think the moment in ch 29 where Elinor "gave way to a burst of tears" is in part a reaction to her own situation as much as Marianne's? She is clearly prompted by Marianne's distress but maybe in this moment she finally releases some of the emotion that she hasn't yet been able to show, when it seems that both of them have been completely disappointed in love.
