I have to say the way this was done in the 1995 movie was more plausible - Mrs Jennings presents Lucy to the Dashwoods as her cousin (whom she seems to have known about for a while), and says that Lucy had been wanting to meet them.

It is a bit hard to imagine how Lucy would have finagled a meeting, though the world was a bit smaller in those days! I wonder if Austen intends us to suspect her?
