He had probably bred the horse with a hope of selling her... he likely does a bit of horse breeding and hopes to sell the mares who aren't suitable for him to ride.. But he's attracted enough to Marianne to want to GIVE the horse to her, but doesn't think that it would be an unacceptable gift, and that it would involve teh Dashwoods in far too much expense.
