used the carriage to go to buy things, in any case.

Why is necessary an explicit mention of a butcher? In chapter 6 it's said that the village of Barton was situated on one of the hills that "rose immediately behind, and at no great distance on each side" of the house; we can assume that there was a butcher, and a baker, and a grocer, etc., as Rachel G said.
