Her notions about her feelings are coming from a prescribed code, but the feelings themselves are not. I see a difference between
1. I am so upset that W has left that I can't stop crying. Good thing, because that is the way I am supposed to feel. and 2. W is gone and I am supposed to be upset about that. So, I can't stop crying. The first is an authentic emotion, the second is not -- it's an act. |
