... I love the way Elinor teases people. I always imagine her saying these things with such a straight face (British humor wise). Even her mother does not escape: "You must begin your improvements upon this house and your difficulties will soon vanish".

Edward also uses wit in a similar manner (when he actually is in good spirits). Wasn't he taking a dig at Marianne about her admiration for old twisted trees?
