I can't recall there even being a suggestion of this in the novel. Although we are not told so in the novel, Sir John is probably a baronet (due to his title, the way his wife is addressed, Barton Park, etc.) . There is also no mention of him having been a younger son who came unexpectedly into his title, so it is unlikely he would have been in the military.
