I'm trying to remember whether that's purely an invention from S&S2, but if they were in the military and acquainted from there, it might explain a lot---in a situation like that your friends can often be just the people you're with for an extended period. First you get used to their company and a genuine affection can spring from that. And Sir John's gregarious good nature is always ready for friendship.
