I have the Shapard annotated Sense and Sensibility. John Dashwood lied to his father because he never gave his half sisters anything. Fanny Dashwood said "Had he (John's father) been in his right mind, he could not have thought of such a thing as begging you to give away half your fortune from your own child." The note said that it was only 2% to 3% of their fortune. They were motivated by greed.
