Well said Barbara! I think this will be a very interesting thread to refer back to as the novel progresses.
Surely Marriane's age is a key factor here. She is very young and therefore such over the top romantic notions are to be expected-especially when the have been cherished and encouraged by her mother from a young age. I know Elinor is only two years older but two years can be a long time, and bring a lot of change in a teenage life. And as we have seen Elinor is more naturally more realistic about life and love.
