I don't think Jane is only being ironic when she mentions the charms of the little boy. The Old Gentleman (what was his name??) could have been a little more considerate towards the girls, but he choose not to. Of course he did not anticipate Mr. Dashwood's early death, but someone who could take thought for three generations of men, could have spared some concern for the girls as well.
