We could perhaps extend this argument further and say that not only was he looking to do as little possible-he knew in advance that Fanny would never stop reminding him about anything he did do! Can you imagine her fury if he had gone ahead and given his sisters £1000 each-every time they had even a small bill to pay his negligence to his only son would be remarked upon.


John Dashwood's therefore has to choose between the desire to be seen doing good, and his domestic happiness. Like many downtrodden husbands it was anything for a quiet life!
