Let us not forget that his original plan to "help" his sisters and his step-mother is to gift each of the girls with 1000 pounds. He is not planning to do anything to help Mrs. Dashwood, and while his gift would certainly help, I don't think it is what his father had in mind.

And I think John knows it. That is why it is so easy for his wife to talk him down from that figure...he was looking to do as little as possible from the word go. His wife is just better at figuring out how to do it.
