They are both equally at fault. While Fanny is the manipulator, I think it is very telling the final piece de resistance is her pointing out that hes Dad would've given all of it to the girls anyway. John is a selfish being at heart, and it really doesn't take that much to change his mind and the fact that he would be jealous of those who should inspire his compassion makes him just as culpable as Fanny.
