Also, Mrs. Dashwood, had she inherited, would have been the object of many fortune-hunters after her widowhood. She is sweet, but impractical. Her fate might have been much worse than it was, had she been wealthy, too.

I am not saying that this line of reasoning occurred in deciding the choice of heirs: it is just a thought that struck me. There would have been a novel as engrossing as this one, with problems as realistic, only with it all happening one generation above!
