I would call John a dirtbag . . .   Written by Mary Anne (9/16/2012 12:03 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Cold-hearted John, penned by Barbara
Are you new?

. . . except that the term would grant him too much force of personality. He's a cipher to me, someone who seems to react to the strongest personality near him. We're told outright that an amiable wife would have made him more amiable, but alas, he married Fanny. You ask what would make him fond of Fanny---well, if she wished for his fondness, she'd have it. He wouldn't have the will to resist.

What I wonder about is how Fanny settled for him? Was he really her only option---wouldn't she have wanted a man of even more fortune and position if she could get one? She so mercenary I imagine she'd angle for the richest man within her reach.
