I think both John and Fanny are equally cold. John does have a slight conscience, but really has no desire to help his sisters. He is only too relieved when his wife gives him a loop hole to slip through and escape from his conscience. I think John could have stood firm if he really wanted to help his sister. They are both equally to blame IMO.
