Are you new?

It wasn't because John already had money that he was to inherit the property, but rather because that keeps the large estate intact, in the Dashwood family name. Assuming that baby Harry lives until adulthood, that's good for another half century, one could safely assume, and more if Harry has sons of his own.

I don't think it has anything at all to do with John already being well off.
