Thht is the way that society operated at the time.. a woman was punished for illicit sex and a man got off pretty much scot free. Maria Rushworth is banished to a distant country home, while Henry gets off scot free.. If Eliza had gone back home earlier on, Brandon might have ben able to salvage the situation a bit more...Possibly he could have covered up the pregnancy and the child could have been fostered. Or he mihgt have found some way of forcing W to marry her as Darcy did with Wickham. Or he might have been able at least to arrange another marriage for Eliza by giving her a good dowry and concealing her indiscretion. But the fact that she was missing for about 8 months could not be concealed... This is what I keep saying,,, that it's BECAUSE a woman had much more to lose than a man by sexual indiscretion that it was imprortant that she should behave well and that her family friends whoever should ensure that she is seen to behave corectly... W's behavour was very bad, I dont deny that, and he should have offered to marry her... or at least to support the child....but IMO the world is full of bad people and sensible people take steps to ensrue that they dont' get hurt by them.... |
