As this discussion is still going on, I feel   Written by Reeba (10/25/2009 6:30 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, pregnancy, penned by Bridget D
Are you new?

I would like to add that when Adam and Eve committed a sin they were both banished from paradise, but in this case the unfairness of the whole thing leads one to sympathise with Eliza.

She alone is punished, while Willoughby has gone on to do well for himself.

Under these circumstances when Eliza has her whole life ahead of her with bringing up a girl, whose life in turn is also not what it should have been, one can stop looking for blaming her IMO.

Even before having the baby she was duly punished throughout her pregnancy with the uncertainty and loneliness of it all.

In spite of the society of that time not accepting pregnancies before marriage, it did happen as many have mentioned.

Till then both were responsible, and the man showed decency by marrying her.
But if he didn't then the blame would logically lie fully on the man, because the woman is ready to marry him.

The 'blame' here is not of the pregnancy but the handling of it IMO

When someone murders anyone the murderer is fully blamed, even if the one murdered was equally responsible for the situation of enmity or whatever.
Because then the reaction would be, "whatever - he shouldn't have done that."

For me this is as serious as murder, considering the times and effects of such a situation.
