Marianne's letter if Sophia weren't present? He reluctantly spoke to Elinor & Marianne at the party, and I can imagine that he might just ignore Marianne's letter rather than try to explain himself. He avoids difficulties whenever possible, imo.

I do think that Sophia knew about Marianne's letters & lock of hair, or Willoughby wouldn't have returned them.
