But perhaps, her malicious nature was borne out of being a female dependent on the good will and intention of other people to live in tolerable comfort. This was perhaps one of the ways in which she could have some active control over her life. I don't know if I am making myself clear...

One more point, I don't think the phrase, she had many relations and old acquaintance to cut means she snubbed them. I don't think the term 'cut' is used in that sense. I think it means she had many people who would be willing to have her visit them. That says quite a lot about her power of flattery...
