One of the pleasures of JA's work is the subtlety of her portrayals of character. Many of her characters are so true to life that we experience a jolt of recognition - "I know someone like that!" or "Oh dear, I was just like that when I was young!" JA's true-to-life characters show that human nature has changed very little over the past two hundred years.
For me, Willoughby is a good example in S&S - I know this man, and recognise his allure despite what reason tells me.
In contrast to human nature, the material world and it's manners and customs have changed greatly, so we don't experience the same flash of recognition so often, but I came across one in Ch.50 which made me LOL. I am engaged in a programme of home improvements which was originally scheduled to take three months but has morphed into a Five Year Plan.
".... they had nothing to wait for after Edward was in possession of the living, but the readiness of the house, to which Colonel Brandon, with an eager desire for the accommodation of Elinor, was making considerable improvements; and after waiting some time for their completion -- after experiencing, as usual, a thousand disappointments and delays, from the unaccountable dilatoriness of the workmen ...."
Some things, it seems, will never ever change... ;-D
So who, or what, do you recognise in S&S?
