... and that is the insistence that his "affections have been long engaged elsewhere." I think Sophia wants him to vow that he doesn't just love her NOW (when their marriage is imminent) but that he loved her before he went off to Devonshire and loved her during their separation.

I can believe that Sophia insisted on him writing an account of what happened during their separation that is flattering and tolerable to herself - that he didn't fall in love with or deliberately/knowingly captivate another girl, but that a girl misinterpreted his ordinary friendliness to her family and developed a raging crush on him.

And I wouldn't be surprised if she made this letter the price of continuing their engagement.

Sophia seemed to know she was buying an untrustworthy husband, and she saw the need to get him in line before she signed on the dotted line...
