Willoughby could also have been afraid that someone would report it to the authorities. Even if that led to nothing worse than some adverse publicity, I feel that's something he would wish to avoid.

Interesting that Brandon does not fear that Elinor will blab about the duel. Maybe that indicates that Wiloughby is (quite rationally) less confident of Elinor's tacit support.
