"There are always going to be flirts and selfish men out there, but I think that for Austen a woman with common sense and a strong character would be able to protect herself against them" - Maybe, maybe not. What about Elizabeth Bennet and Wickham?

In chapter 31 of S&S, we are told that Eliza and her young acquaintances were allowed to roam freely about the town as they chose, and whilst many 16-year-old girls do have common sense, young girls are very easily influenced and are easy targets for certain dishonourable men....
