I'm sure the reason Marianne would not be able to look her family in the face is if she were not to fulfil her responsibilities to her romantic ideas, not because she wants to draw attention to herself. If she were to marry someone at 35, or to marry anyone except Willoughby, that would also violate those ideas (second attachments and middle-aged love both being "impossible" under this view), and would probably occasion a similar sense of shame in front of her family - except that, by this stage, one would hope that she would have renounced such opinions.
