I think the reason many of us hate Willoughby...   Written by Elizabeth K (10/15/2009 4:30 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, too negative, penned by Bridget D
Are you new?

or dislike him is because of the way he behaved towards Eliza and who knows how many other young, parent-less girls. I dislike him because he took advantage of Eliza's trust in a very opportunistic way, seducing her and then abandoning her and leaving her, pregnant and alone, to fend for herself. Eliza was probably under the mistaken belief that he truly loved her, and would marry her. Poor girl, I really don't think it's fair to blame her for her innocence and trust.

The way he treated Marianne wasn't much better, and I see Willoughby as a money-grabbing, mercenary, opportunistic cad! I have a negative view of him because an honourable gentleman would not go around seducing young ladies and then abandoning them when he has finished with them.
