..picturing Mrs. Ferrars, not only asking about a letter from a young woman, but literally opening it. A letter from a young lady would immediately send up a red flag of the possibility of a secret engagement since that was the only circumstance in which she was suppose to be able to write him. If someone whom we know to be as nasty as Fanny has to cover for her mother's rudeness and controlling nature in public, then a nasty piece of work such as Mrs. Farrars would think nothing of opening a letter in her own home and then confronting Edward with not one ounce of guilt or embarassment.
