yes I agree he didn't intned to marry her.. but then that is hardly surprsing since she was foolish enough to let him seduce her without marriage... but even when Mrs Smith said that if he married her she would leave him her fortune, IIRC he refused... and IMO it would have been awkward socially for them to have covered up the fact that they had lived togehter and had a child...
