Marianne in love   Written by Bridget D (10/11/2009 8:08 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Not much help needed, penned by Outi
Are you new?

I am incliend to feel that Marianne is "ready to fall in love" iwth the first attractive man who seems to fulfil her ideals.. and who comes "wrapped in a nice package". After all, she positively dislikes Brandon, and he is clearly fond of her, but he's not young and handsome and dashing and witty, so she doesn't see any of his good qualities...

yes Willougby pretended to be more like her than he really was, boht in terms of things like the poetry they liked and so on and also in pretending to share her values... but still, I think that most people tend ot do this a bit when they start a flirtation or relationship.... Girls shiver watching their men play football - and later they refuse to go to the games - Men go to see romantic movies which bore tehm etc etc. I do think that (I always seem to be defending Willoughby) he might have thought at first that M was worldly enough to know a flirtation from a real love affair. Though of course - he liked having a girl really falling in love with him... and he did encourage her....

and while W did encourage her to be more selfish and "wrapped up" in hteir flirtation, so as to ignore the other people in their circile, IMO M already did this quite a lot...
