Of course he is not drunk... that is plain from the narrative. as for knowing about the Palmers being away, what exactly does it matter? It might have been easier for him to gain entry to the house if the Palmers weren't there, but I dont think that he would have not come even if they had been there......

I agree that his journey is very self serving in many ways, but it does prove that he has SOME capacity for feeling guilty....
