I cannot blame Marianne for hoping to fulfill her girlish dreams. Marianne was eager, as she is in all things (Ch. 1) but she had no reason to assume a gentleman would make love to her without honorable intent. Marianne was ready to believe the man was as perfect as his appearance and spirited manner suggested and Willoughby made sure she did believe it with lies and deceit. Willoughby took all the advantages of an engaged man, led her on and then abandoned the field—that is what broke Marianne’s heart.
