that's what I find ironic/poignant in the whole situation... Colonel Brandon is going on the assumption that Edward and Lucy are these persecuted innocents, true lovers being victimized by cruel parents, needing and deserving his kindness ... if only he knew the truth!

that Edward would rather escape the engagement, and that Lucy is hanging on to him for the hope of his future wealth and prestige.

He could not give this gift to two less genuinely appreciative recipients ;-)
