JA was trying to show the plight of unprotected women, or in other words, the dependence of women on the presence of men in their family/life to protect them.

The fact that it was Eliza and not her friend who had a father right there in Bath, made a lot of difference to Willoughby in deciding who to seduce I'm quite sure.
