in consequence of the missive, Rape or Seduction?, penned by Robbin
From what I understand, English common law considered seduction a crime ("in law, the act of a man enticing (without the use of physical force) a previously chaste woman to consent to sexual intercourse", according to dictionary.com).
The word seduction comes from the Latin for "leading astray." The act of seduction is a crime stretching back to biblical record, and lasting into the 20th c. in the US.
Plus, it makes for a great plot device.
