Forgive me for jumping in so late!   Written by Ramya (10/8/2009 2:49 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Where he lived..., penned by Barbara
Are you new?

I've been lurking and reading the group-read posts. This discussion on Eliza/Willoughby is fascinating. There are so many different angles to consider in this matter, including the one mentioned my TimLee- the nature vs. nurture part.

I don't think assigning Eliza some just blame takes away the fact that Willoughby had ultimate responsibility in the matter. After all, one does blame Marianne for her excessive behavior without excusing either her mother's faults of omission or Willoughby's more egregious deeds. I feel that Eliza II had some Lydia-like tendencies. Her loyalty to Willoughby even months after he deserted her reminds me of Lydia's complete refusal to leave Wickham when Darcy spoke to her. And she only contacts Col. Brandon once she gets really desperate.

I wonder if mails were forwarded in those days. After all, many people did reside in different places depending on the season.
