Are you new?

Willoughby hasn't been where he lived for at least some portion of the months where she might have been looking for him. He was at Allenham from September to November (things were getting desperate for her around the end of October, when Colonel Brandon left). If he didn't tell her about that, how would she know? There's no reason to imagine that he did tell her about Allenham.

Also, in London we read that Fanny and John 'took a very good house'. Not everyone owns the place where they live in London, like Mrs. Jennings.

If Willoughby was in London during some of the time that Eliza had been trying to find him, it's not necessarily at any place she can 'look up' or even any place that he's stayed before. We know his finances were precarious--I doubt he could afford to keep a place of his own in London.

What kind of a directory are you imagining existed at that time?
