engagements and sex?   Written by Bridget D (10/8/2009 1:30 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, engaged couples and sexual activity, penned by Heather Leigh
Are you new?

while this was apparently not unknown among say the rural working classes, ie that an engaged couple were considered to have some licence to become intimate and not ot marry till the woman became pregnant... I dont think it was the case among the upper and middle classes. It was possible to have long engagmenents among say the poorer gentry and upper middle classes where there mihgt be a long wait while the man made enough money to be able to support a wife and children... but still to the best of my knowledge in general upper class engagments were shortish and there was no licence to have sex!
