But they were. What about Harriette Wilson the famous courtesan who at 15 became the mistress of Lord Craven? IIRC the age of consent was 12 for girls - at least it was in much of the Victorian era... and many girls were married at 15 or 16...

AFAIK< there was nothing "unacceptable" in having a girl of that age as a mistress
