Viper in my bosom!   Written by Barbara (10/6/2009 2:03 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Ch.37 Uproar at Harley Street, penned by Rachel G

Are you new?

I laugh at this scene very much, and it is a favourite scene in S&S2, which would be all the funnier if Mrs. Ferrars and Anne Steele were there too! Kind-hearted Mrs. Jennings has no pity for Fanny or her mother, and Elinor has no compassion for them at all, so I have no compunction in saying that I don't have any pity for them, either.

I do feel a bit sorry for Lucy, although she obviously should not have expected anything better or different than this to happen. Perhaps she hoped that Edward would tell them without her being there and she would be spared the scene? If she hadn't exalted over how much they seemed to like her to Elinor before this scene, I'd feel a lot worse for her.

I try to picture what falling into hysterics would look/be like. I suppose screaming, crying, pounding things, etc.? Considering that Mrs. Ferrars barely talks, this is quite a display for her!!
