Elinor is too generous sometimes...   Written by Heather Leigh (10/5/2009 1:16 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, I thought this one too, penned by Barbara
Are you new?

What an understatement - "Lucy does not want sense" -- when Lucy's "sense" is so extreme that it should be called self-interest, calculation, hypocrisy, scheming, and deception!

(ahem. pardon my indignation.)

But then, we have seen from the example of the Dashwoods and Willoughby that "everything good" (financially) can be gained from these qualities.

The question would be - whether Edward could be happy with a calculating, hypocritical, and scheming wife, even if her character resulted in financial gain and social status for him? Hard to imagine that Lucy's character could be the foundation for a happy relationship between them.
