thanks for this observation Reeba! I agree about the special "intimate" tone and also find it comically ironic because the "I" sounds so exaggeratedly respectful of and sympathetic to "Mrs. John Dashwood". Suddenly the narrator sounds like a friend sitting down next to you to recount some news about a well-known - even superior - person.
