but surely she does not need to be told by her guardian that it is (a) wrong and (b) foolish to sleep with a man before marriage? that would be part of her normal Christian teaching and no doubt the woman who looked after her would have emphasised that a girl must be careful of her virtue?

While I dont like agreeing with Willoughby I think that Eliza II was pretty stupid, as he put it, just because he was a libertine, it did not make her a saint...
